The Abu Family Story

PHOTOS BY KAREN WALROND (CHOOKOOLOONKS)

Abdimalik Abu and his wife were sharing a small apartment with their two elementary-aged boys when they applied to become Houston Habitat homeowners. Mr. Abu’s father owns a house in one of the Houston neighborhoods planned and built by Houston Habitat, and recommended his son look into the program.

The Abus were accepted not a moment too soon, as they discovered they were pregnant with twins soon after the process began! The family was selected for our Milby Park neighborhood and matched up with sponsor GE Energy Company.

One of the Abus’ sons developed asthma while living in the family’s apartment, but timing was once again on their side. Thanks to GE and grants and gifts from Green Mountain Energy and New Living, the Abu family home was the first Houston Habitat home to go “all green.” Solar panels were installed for electricity generation alongside a solar-powered hot water and healthy indoor building materials such as recycled cabinetry and non-toxic paint.
