| Become a Home Owner
Houston Habitat for Humanity hosts approximately 1-2 homeowner application events each year. Please check our website periodically for the next application fair date.
Before applying, please review the criteria below and frequently asked questions for your consideration. This program is for first-time homebuyers only.
To qualify: - You must be a US citizen or have permanent resident status
- You must currently live in substandard housing
- Your total income must be at least $21,350 per year depending on family size
- You must have decent credit
- Your monthly obligations must not outweigh your ability to pay your mortgage
- You must pay $2000.00 toward closing costs
- You must be willing to partner with Houston Habitat and contribute 300 hours of "sweat equity" as your down payment.
Is a Houston Habitat home free? No. We sell homes to qualified families at cost with a zero interest loan.
Do I rent the home from you? No. Habitat homes are purchased, not rented. You own the home.
Where does Houston Habitat build homes? We build in different places depending on the availability of land. Where we are building homes today may not be where we will be building tomorrow.
Other Criteria: - You will be considered for a Habitat home if your present housing is not adequate and if you are unable to obtain adequate housing through other conventional means. Lack of adequate housing may include failure to meet city property maintenance standards or problems with the present structure; water, electrical or sewage service systems; or heating system. Also taken into consideration are the number, ages and gender of children compared to the number of bedrooms in your present home.
- The percentage of your monthly income that you currently spend on housing is a consideration. You will be required to openly and fully discuss your financial situation with Habitat personnel.

We are pledged to the letter and spirit of U.S. policy for the achievement of equal housing opportunity throughout the nation. We encourage and support an affirmative advertising and marketing program in which there are no barriers to obtaining housing because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, age, marital status, sexual orientation, or sources of income.
