Sweat Equity

All Houston Habitat clients participate in building Houston Habitat homes, taking educational classes, and giving back to the community. We call this Sweat Equity.

  • Sweat Equity Builds Skills and Knowledge.

Each family who partners with Habitat completes up to 250 hours of sweat equity before move-in day.

Financial Education

From budgeting and maintaining good credit to routine repairs and good neighbor behaviors, Houston Habitat ensures partners are ready for the responsibilities of homeownership.

Construction

Family partners work alongside volunteers and construction staff to build Houston Habitat homes. This work is not only a skill builder but also empowers individuals in our program.

100 hours  Family and friends may help family partners to complete the 100-hour requirement.

Accommodations are available if physical limitations do not allow you to perform construction work.

Pay-It-Forward

50 hours of volunteer work at the Houston Habitat ReStore locations, the Settegast Community Garden and other nonprofit community service with prior authorization.

Financial Education Classes

Homebuyer Education
Learn about the complexities and costs of home buying, equipping yourself with the knowledge and resources needed to assess your financial and emotional readiness for homeownership. (8 hours)

Fundamentals of Good Credit
Learn how to take control of your financial health by understanding your credit and financial wellness. Upon completing this class your will have the knowledge and tools needed to reach your personal financial and housing goals. (15 Hours)

5 Assets to a Rich Life
Build assets by building good habits through quality relationships, good health, work skills, savings, retirement, affordable homeownership, insurance, education, and estate planning. (2.5 hours)

General Skills & Knowledge
Additional classes that cover topics including Home Maintenance and Closing Process. (20.5 hours)
