Donor Advised Funds

What are Donor Advised Funds (DAF)?

Donor-Advised Funds (DAF) are a smart way to manage your philanthropy, allowing you to make a charitable contribution using a variety of assets, receive an immediate tax deduction, and then recommend grants from the fund over time.

Advantages:

  • Receive immediate tax benefits.
  • Donor Advised Funds are more affordable, less time-consuming, and offer more privacy than creating a private foundation.
  • Donor Advised Funds allow you to contribute more to your favorite charities and non-profits due to the tax benefits and the wide range of assets that are accepted.

How do I donate through a Donor Advised Fund?

Contact your legal or financial advisor to donate through a Donor Advised Fund. If you currently have a Donor Advised Fund set up and would like to support Houston Habitat, contact us for more information at khoskin@houstonhabitat.org or plannedgivining@houstonhabitat.org.

Planned Gifts

Provide a legacy of support for Houston Habitat for Humanity and create opportunities for families to obtain a decent and affordable place to call home by making a planned gift.

Make a Gift Through Your Will or Living Trust

One simple and flexible way to ensure that your legacy of empowerment continues for years to come is by making a gift in your will or living trust, known as a charitable bequest.

We’ve partnered with FreeWill to help you create your will or trust in just 20 minutes for free. You can use this resource on its own or use it to document your wishes before finalizing your plans with an attorney.

You may also share the suggested language below with your attorney:

“I hereby give and bequeath ___% [or $_________] of my estate to Houston Habitat for Humanity (Federal Tax ID# 76-0207084) to be used in the areas of greatest need as the board of directors may determine.”

Have you already included a gift in your will or trust? Please fill out this form to let us know! We would love to thank you for your generosity.

Do you have an IRA, 401(k), life insurance policy, or any other non-probate assets not included in your will? Designating our organization as a beneficiary of one or more of these is another way to establish your legacy with Houston Habitat for Humanity. FreeWill can also help you plan for all of your non-probate assets

If you have questions, please contact us at plannedgiving@houstonhabitat.org.

QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTIONS FROM AN IRA

Many donors feel that directly transferring funds from IRAs is a great tax-saving way to help Habitat families. This popular gift option was commonly referred to as an IRA charitable rollover and is now known as a qualified charitable distribution, or QCD for short.

Benefits of Giving From Your IRA:

  • You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions.
  • Since the gift doesn’t count as income, it can reduce your annual income level. This may help lower Medicare premiums and decrease the amount of Social Security that is subject to tax.
  • The transfer of funds counts toward your annual Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) if you 73 or older.

Be sure to check with your professional advisor to determine whether this gift plan is right for you. This information is not meant as tax or legal advice.

How it Works:

  • You must be 70½ or older, and if you are required to take minimum distributions (RMD) at 73 or older, this gift will satisfy all or part of your obligation.
  • You can give any amount (up to $108,000 per individual) in 2025 from your IRA directly to Habitat. Habitat for Humanity International is a qualified charity to receive these gifts.

To ensure your gift is credited toward the 2025 tax year, please request your transfer by December 1, especially if you are relying on this gift to fulfill your Required Minimum Distribution.

To get started, contact your IRA custodian. When submitting your forms, be sure to designate your contribution to:

Houston Habitat for Humanity Inc.
3750 N McCarty St, Houston, TX 77029
EIN: 76-0207084
