Critical Home Repair Program

Houston Habitat’s Critical Home Repair program serves seniors and veterans in Houston, TX with the goal of allowing individuals and families to stay in their own home, preserving existing affordable communities.

Our Critical Home Repair program preserves homes that would have been torn down and replaced with new houses that are too expensive for existing community residents, helping to slow gentrification. It is subdivided into our Senior Home Repair and Veteran Home Repair programs, read more below.

Senior Home Repair

77% of older Americans want to remain in their homes for the long term, and 34%
recognize they may need to make physical changes to their house, such as modifying a
bathroom or installing ramps in their homes.

Over the next 20 years, households in their 80s will be the fastest-growing age group. Houston Habitat’s Senior Repair program, part of our Critical Home Repair Program, provides effective and sustainable solutions for elderly homeowners to age in place. Our organization uses the Housing Plus model and Aging in Place strategies when working with older adult homeowners. Housing Plus includes two assessments to ensure we understand each homeowner’s needs.

Veteran Home Repair

Houston Habitat repairs homes of low-income veterans, as part of our Critical Home Repair Program, in our commitment to support and honor the veteran community. Our organization is a proud member of the Habitat for Humanity Repair Corps which is generously funded by The Home Depot Foundation. The Repair Corps enables Houston Habitat to help veterans build strength, stability and independence through critical home repairs on owner-occupied homes.
